San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan plans to deploy some projected starters in Thursday's preseason game at SoFi Stadium against the Los Angeles Chargers, a shift from the season opener where virtually no starters played. Quarterback Brock Purdy is likely to see snaps, while defensive end Nick Bosa and running back Christian McCaffrey are expected to sit out. Wide receiver Mike Evans is also questionable after experiencing tightness during Tuesday's practice.
Shanahan's decision follows a disappointing joint practice session with the Chargers on Tuesday. The 49ers struggled during ball-movement drills and two-minute situations, prompting the coach to seek more evaluation of his starting lineup. Purdy acknowledged the team's poor performance, noting that fundamentals were off and the offense lacked intensity.
The starters are expected to play limited snaps, likely a series or two, as the 49ers prepare for their regular season opener on September 10 against the Chargers.
