Half a century has passed since Antonín Panenka secured the European Championship for Czechoslovakia with an audacious chip penalty. The technique remained largely unheralded until Francesco Totti revived it at Euro 2000, introducing the move to modern audiences.

The penalty's name gained traction gradually over the following decades. It wasn't widely used as a common term until years after Totti's famous attempt, and didn't earn its own Wikipedia entry until 2014. Today, the Panenka is instantly recognizable to football fans worldwide.
