Alexander Zverev defeated Terence Atmane 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (8-6) on Monday to reach the Cincinnati Open last 16. The top seed required both sets to go to tiebreaks against the French opponent, who started strongly with a 3-0 lead before Zverev found his form.
Atmane rallied twice to lead 4-3 and 5-4 in the first set, but Zverev controlled the opening tiebreak. In the second set, the German saved an early break point and eventually forced another tiebreak to secure victory. Zverev will face either Tommy Paul or Adolfo Vallejo in the next round.
The 29-year-old also required three sets to beat Cameron Norrie 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 in his opening match. Cincinnati serves as his final preparation before the US Open begins in New York on August 30.
