Alexander Zverev defeated Terence Atmane 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (8-6) on Monday to reach the Cincinnati Open's round of 16. The top seed will face either Tommy Paul or Adolfo Vallejo next. Atmane started strongly with a 3-0 lead but Zverev recovered to force two tie-breaks, winning both.
Zverev saved a break point early in the second set and controlled much of the match despite failing to create his own break opportunities. The 29-year-old German also needed three sets to defeat Cameron Norrie in his opening match, winning 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Cincinnati serves as Zverev's final preparation before the US Open begins in New York on August 30. He enters the tournament following a second-round loss to Tallon Griekspoor at Montreal earlier this month.
